Cycle Across Maryland, CAM 2002

Randy Schoch
As I sit here at my PC waiting for the Super Bowl to come on, nursing my third head cold of the season, and suffering thru one of the coldest winters in recent years, my memory takes me back to last summer and CAM '02 and the many pleasant thoughts about being warm and bicycling. Oh, I'm not trying to fool myself or any one else that CAM '02 was all "pleasant thoughts". There was the extreme heat all week , high winds on several of the days, and the rain at the end of the tour. Then there were the problems with the host sites and the motels being so far from each other, the buses that were late or never came causing missed meals and missed tour meetings. Then there is the subject of the food. Some said the food was OK but at least it was expensive??
Which brings me back to the "pleasant thoughts". It sort of reminds me of the credit card commercial that was running on TV last fall that would go something like this for me. Registration = several hundred. Bikes and equipment = many more hundreds. Motels and food = hundreds. The enjoyment of riding with friends, the bonding and renewal of relationships with my two adult daughters and my wife = PRICELESS !
This was the organization ONE LESS CAR's first attempt at running an event of this magnitude and mistakes were made. But, I am willing to forgive and try again. Together we can make CAM '03 a success.
See you next summer,
