GREENBELT COLLEGE PARK MEANDER Class B/CC 27 mi. 1:30 pm from Bladensburg Waterfront Park. We'll meander up the Northeast Anacostia Trail; loop thru Greenbelt Park; circle around Lake Artemesia and UM; then return by way of the Northwest Anacostia Trail. I will stay in the B range and no one will be dropped. We should be back in plenty of time to catch the actual Super Bowl.

JAN'S THREE HILLER Class A 43 mi. 10:00 am from William B. Wade Elementary School. Hills are just the thing to keep you warm on a chilly February day. This route includes the "Beast" of Bel Alton, "Blue Dog" (aka Rose Hill) and "!@#%!!" (aka Bumpy Oak). There are a couple of smaller hills as well, so choose your gearing wisely. Ride goes if temperature is 32+ an hour before ride start time and roads are dry.
Dir: From Beltway I-95 Exit 7-A take Md 5 south for 9.6 miles to merge with US 301. Go south on US 301 6.4 miles, turn right on Smallwood Drive to the school on your left after 1.9 miles.

MASON NECK MEANDER Class CC 22 mi. 11:00 am from Gunston Elementary School. A leisurely ride through beautiful neighborhoods and Mason Neck Park. No go in rain, or even wet roads, unless the day is surprisingly warm. Also, no go if temperature is less than 40 degrees. Call ride leader the morning of the ride if weather is doubtful. Lunch may be arranged for afterward if folks are interested.

From the park, we'll head straight down to Allen's Fresh then head over to Charlotte Hall for a little jaunt on the Three Notch Trail (how lovely), then back to the park. The ride title will reveal the evidence on Rt. 236. I WILL BE STICKING TO THE B PACE! NO EXCUSES.

FRIENDSHIP TO NORTH BEACH PRESIDENTS' DAY RIDE Class A 32 to 44 mi. 10:00 am from Friendship United Methodist Church. Here's a scenic rolling route with views of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay. If it’s really cold and the majority agrees, we’ll take the short cut. We'll start our ride adjacent to the Fabulous Brew Café/coffee shop. After the ride, those that want to stay for lunch or a warm beverage would have that option. The church across the street has kindly offered the use of their overflow lot to us, since the coffee shop has limited parking. This will be a joint ride posted to PPTC. WAYSON CORNER LOOP 34 / 41 Class B/CC 41 mi. 10:30 am from Wayson's Corner Park & Ride. This ride takes us Galesville -- where there is a really neat store. Nice rolling hills and a good work out. The temp for the CC ride must be 40'ish to be reasonable for Walter to go out. If the weather appears questionable for the B ride, kindly call or email Walter to find out if the ride is a go.

RIDE CLASSIFICATIONS

D CASUAL RIDES. 5 to 15 miles, Average Moving Speed (AMS) from 8 to 10 mph, but may vary depending on terrain, traffic, and ability of riders. Frequent stops, every 5 miles. Terrain should be flat or rolling.
C SHORT TOURING. 30 miles or less in length. AMS from 10 to 12 mph. Uphill slows down substantially. Stops planned every 5 to 10 miles.
CC EASY TOURING. AMS between 12 and 13 mph; cruising speeds may reach 15 mph. Uphill pace slows down substantially. Stops every 10 to 15 miles.
B TOURING. AMS between 13.1 and 15.0 mph; cruising speeds may reach 18 mph. Uphill pace slows down quite a bit. Rest stops every 10 to 15 miles.
A FAST TOURING. AMS between 15.1 and 17.0 mph. Riders on fast touring work to keep up the pace on hills. Rest stops planned every 15 to 25 miles.
AA FAST TRAINING. AMS between 17.1 to 19.+ mph. Pace lines approach 25 mph. Rest stops every 25 to 50 miles.
 

WEATHER RULES

Unless otherwise stated, rides may be canceled if the temperature is less than 40 degrees or the chance of rain is greater than 50% on 30l-936-l2l2 or www.weather.com one hour before the ride. Call the ride leader if in doubt.

Ride Leaders Guidelines

  1. Prepare a cue sheet and/or map (either new or existing club route) and scout the route before the ride. You may use cue sheets in the club's cue sheet library. Other good places to find cue sheets or to create a cue sheet are www.RouteSlip.com and www.Bikely.com.
  2. If you have a cell phone, include its number on the cue sheet and have your cell phone on during the ride.
  3. Arrive 10-15 minutes before the ride start time.
  4. Have all riders sign a release sign-up form.
  5. Give all riders a cue sheet and/or map.
  6. Welcome the riders and brief them on details of ride stops, problems, pace, etc.
  7. Make sure the riders wear helmets.
  8. "Lead from the rear" or appoint someone to "ride sweep!"
  9. Ride at the advertised pace!
  10. Carry the sign-up sheet with you on the ride so that you have riders' emergency contact information if needed.
  11. After the ride, mail sign-up sheet and ride report to the road captain. You may e-mail your report to the road captain.

Rider Responsibilities

  1. Arrive early to sign-in and be ready to leave on time.
  2. Some starting points do not have restrooms, plan accordingly.
  3. Make sure your bicycle is in proper working order before you arrive.
  4. Carry a spare tube, patch kit, pump, water bottle and snack.
  5. Carry identification and emergency money.
  6. Sign a ride waiver and get a cue sheet and/or map from the ride leader.
  7. Wear a helmet!
  8. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws.
  9. Do not "bike off" more than you can do. Go on rides within your ability, interest and experience level. If in doubt, phone the ride leader.
  10. Riders should maintain the pace as advertised. The rider may ride faster or slower than this pace if s/he knows the route and advises the leader accordingly. In this case the leader will not be responsible for the cyclists safe return or completion of the ride.
  11. Riders should advise the ride leader if the rider will not complete the ride or deviate from the designated route.
  12. Riders should warn nearby cyclists of road debris or, when in the rear, warning leading cyclists of approaching motorists from behind.
  13. Riders should as simple courtesy help out others with mechanical problems. Riders will try to help but there is no obligation to wait for cyclists with major breakdowns.
  14. Riders should use common sense and courtesy.
