JONES POINT TO THE NATIONAL ARBORETUM Class CC/TOURING 34 mi. 10:00 AM from Jones Point Park. Spring is here at last - better late than never - and it should be quite lovely at the National Arboretum. This route takes the Mount Vernon Trail into DC, then wends its way through the mall and through quiet residential neighborhoods to a rest stop at Union Market, through Gallaudet University and up West Virginia Ave to the Arboretum. We'll ride through the Arboretum, stopping at the Capitol Columns and the Bonsai exhibit, then return stopping at Eastern Market before crossing the Potomac back to the Mount Vernon Trail. When we get to Four Mile Run, we'll leave the trail and take seldom-seen Alexandria back streets back to Jones Point Park. Route map & GPS files are here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7003225 and the cue sheet is in the Cloud: https://goo.gl/8E4njN This is a BYOQ (Bring Your Own Cue Sheet) Printed copies will be available by prior arrangement.

Drive two blocks, then turn right onto South Royal Street. Drive to the cul-de-sac at the end of the street and turn left to enter the park.

TOUR DE ACCOKEEK Class CC AND UP 17.0 mi. 5:30 PM from Accokeek Firehouse. Long time mid-week club favorite. It's not too long, nor too short, nor too fast. It is a CC-Touring class, so please be able to ride at a sustained 12 - 14 ams. Faster riders are welcome, and there is usually a fast and fun and "slightly" competitive group in front. For all the rest of us, there is usually a B-class group in the middle, and a true CC group (which also stands for the "casual conversation" group) bringing up the rear. No one gets dropped, and while the ride leader may sprint ahead occasionally, there will always be a designated person riding "sweep." This is a great skills-building ride. We also go down a pretty long hill (expect to reach 35 mph or more!), and of course, what goes down must go up, so there's a good "double-climb" hill at about mile 12. A rest stop at the shore of the Potomac River around mile 10. Come out and join the fun! Some riders like to go to the local B&J Carry-Out after the ride for ice cream. Here's a link to the ride so you can check out our route. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12340169. Print a cue sheet to bring with you and if you forget the ride leader usually has a few as well. See you on Wednesday.
Dir: Take Md 210 south approximately 10 mi. from the beltway. Go right on Livingston Road at the Accokeek Rd 373 light (B&J Carryout). The fire station is on right after about 3/4 mi. Park toward the back.[16111 Livingston Rd, Accokeek, MD]

PISGAH PARK 32 Class B 32 mi. 10:00 AM from Pisgah Park. The May Metric is on Saturday, May 5, but it may rain. This 32 mile ride from Pisgah Park is to provide a ride to help placate our loss of a possible rain-out of our May Metric. This Pisgah Park ride has less than 1000 feet elevation gain. This is my first ever attempt to develop a route on Ride With GPS so I cannot guarantee how well I did but here is it's reference: ridewithgps.com/routes/27403795 I do not know how to develop the Google Cloud cue sheet so I will bring some cue sheets with me. One rest stop at Nanjemoy Community Center for water and toilets. We should beat the heat. I expect a 15 - 15.5 mph average speed. You can go as fast, or slow, as you want.
Dir: From the intersection of Mason Springs Rd and Poorhouse Rd (i.e., the Pisgah store) continue south on Mason Spring Rd for about 7/10 of a mile, then turn right on Pisgah Park Pl. Follow the park entrance road 0.4 mi then go left into the park. 6645 Mason Springs Rd, La Plata, MD 20646

BEST OF BRANDYWINE: HUGHESVILLE & CROOM Class CC/TOURING 39 mi. 10:30 AM from North Keys Community Park. Since the forecast has improved (they had been predicting afternoon thunderstorms for Thursday) and it promises to be a beautiful day, it just seems like a shame to do so few miles with so little climbing, so I've created an extended version, 39 miles, that differs from the shorter, flater version the AB group is doing by turning right on Covington at the Five Points and following it as it becomes Croom, riding the Croom Rollers the hard way as far as Baden Westwood, then taking Baden Westwood back to Brandywine Road to rejoin the main route back to North Keys Park.Route map & GPS files are here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/27424079 39 mi, 937' of elevation gain. WEATHER RULES

Unless otherwise stated, rides may be canceled if the temperature is less than 40 degrees or the chance of precipitation is greater than 50% on www.weather.com during the ride. Call the ride leader if in doubt.

Ride Leaders Guidelines

  1. Prepare a cue sheet and/or map (either new or existing club route) and scout the route before the ride. You may use cue sheets in the club's cue sheet library. Other good places to find cue sheets or to create a cue sheet are www.BikeRouteToaster.com, www.RideWithGPS.com, www.Bikely.com, and www.MapMyRide.com.
  2. Submit the ride to the Ride Schedule with the online Ride Submission Form.   Rides submitted will automatically appear on the online schedule. To submit multiples rides, use your browser's "back" button to return to the ride submission form.
  3. If you have a cell phone, include its number on the cue sheet and have your cell phone on during the ride.
  4. Arrive 10-15 minutes before the ride start time.
  5. Have all riders sign a release sign-up form.
  6. Give all riders a cue sheet and/or map.
  7. Welcome the riders and brief them on details of ride stops, problems, pace, etc.
  8. Make sure the riders wear helmets.
  9. "Lead from the rear" or appoint someone to "ride sweep!"
  10. Ride at the advertised pace!
  11. Carry the sign-up sheet with you on the ride so that you have riders' emergency contact information if needed.
  12. After the ride, post your ride report at http://ohbike.memberlodge.org/reports.

Rider Responsibilities

  1. Arrive early to sign-in and be ready to leave on time.
  2. Some starting points do not have restrooms, plan accordingly.
  3. Make sure your bicycle is in proper working order before you arrive.
  4. Carry a spare tube, patch kit, pump, water bottle and snack.
  5. Carry identification and emergency money.
  6. Sign a ride waiver and get a cue sheet and/or map from the ride leader.
  7. Wear a helmet!
  8. Practice safety and obey all traffic laws.
  9. Do not "bike off" more than you can do. Go on rides within your ability, interest and experience level. If in doubt, phone the ride leader.
  10. Riders should maintain the pace as advertised. The rider may ride faster or slower than this pace if s/he knows the route and advises the leader accordingly. In this case the leader will not be responsible for the cyclists safe return or completion of the ride.
  11. Riders should advise the ride leader if the rider will not complete the ride or deviate from the designated route.
  12. Riders should warn nearby cyclists of road debris or, when in the rear, warning leading cyclists of approaching motorists from behind.
  13. Riders should as simple courtesy help out others with mechanical problems. Riders will try to help but there is no obligation to wait for cyclists with major breakdowns.
  14. Riders should use common sense and courtesy.
