Sharon Balenger showing a map of her Big Ride across the country
 Our Featured Speaker

Sharon Balenger was one of the 730 bicyclists to cycle across the United States in the 1998 GTE Big Ride. She told of some of her experiences, such as going almost 50 mph down a mountain with brakes not working. She faced challenges of severe weather with temperature extremes, hail, snow, rain, and sleet, as well as oppressive heat. She overcame all the challenges and is ready to ride in the Odyssey 2000 Ride.

The GTE Big Ride: The Ride of a Lifetime  730 bicyclists pedaled 3,254-miles in 48 days, from Seattle to Washington, D.C, June 15 to August 1, 1998.  The ride helped  raise over $6 million for The American Lung Association.

Officers for 1999-2000
President  Pierre Summerville
Vice Pres. George Schneider
Secretary  Diane Harris
Treasurer  Jim Hudnall
Road Capt.  Lee Martin

Pierre, Diane, and Jim were re-elected for another year to continue serving in the same offices.

George Schneider volunteered (thanks, George) and was elected to serve as vice-president. He replaces outgoing vice-president Chris Wainwright. Chris found that new twin babies greatly curtailed his time for bicycling. Thanks, Chris, for your years of service as VP.  Chris will continue to work with the Cycle Across Maryland Teens.

Lee Martin had been serving as interim Road Captain, and now it's official. Lee has made a great come-back from a very serious cycling accident in January 1998. He had severe injuries and life-threatening complications after a fall caused by a dog charging into his front wheel. We are so glad to have Lee back on the road with us.

Southern Prince George's County Trails Coalition

Mark Holt, founder of the Southern Prince George's County Trails Coalition, gave a report on the Coalition. The Coalition consists of community organizations in Southern Prince George’s County that are interested in our area trail system.
The Coalition has worked with the county's Bicycle Trail Advisory Group to assure that trails and bikeways in our area have high priority in county planning. The Henson Creek Trail has the highest priority, with high priority also given to the Potomac Heritage Trail along the Potomac River from Oxon Cove to Fort Foote.
Coalition members have also met with our district's county councilman to gain support for trail and  bikeway development and improvement.
There are no fees or dues for joining the Coalition, but each member organization appoints at least one Coalition liaison to receive and distribute information about Coalition activities.  Current members of the Coalition are:

Remembering Bob

Robert McMaster
July 6, 1915 - February 9, 1999

Dear Members and Friends,
Bob was truly one of my incentives to do my best in our club. When you think of the words dedication, commitment and sacrifice, this gentleman was an example of them all. The OHBTC will miss him.

Club President, Pierre Summerville
BOB McMASTER was a charter member of our club, three times president, generally leading a ride a month, planning and riding in his combination all-class birthday watermelon ride every July, serving as volunteer arrow-painter and helping in other ways with the Centuries.
He and Betty hosted at least one of our (formerly  annual) New Members August Picnics. He also was a helpful advisor to any rider whose  bike needed adjusting, and once arranged with a bikeshop to exchange the bike of a new member who had bought the wrong size.
He had great skill in signing up sponsors and doing bicycle tune-ups for the benefit of the Association for Retarded Citizens. He became a major - and once the top  - fundraiser for  their bike-a-thon.
With all his involvement, he still kept up his yard and gave time to his family. In short, he lived with a good enthusiasm in all that he did. His consistent good humor and unwavering commitment will assure that his spirit lives on in those who knew him.

At his graveside service, the minister said some of his last words were "Tell everyone to remember my mother's 100th birthday June 5th." Her address is below so the many cards from our club members will attest to his place in our hearts.
