15th Fall Bicycle Ride
Sunday, October 27, 2002
On a fall morning perfect for a bicycle ride, more than 30 bicyclists gathered at REI at 9801 Rhode Island Avenue in College Park for the 15th Fall Ride. The rides are organized by Bill Kelly, chairman of the College Park Area Bicycle Coalition. REI and Jill DiMauro provided door prizes, restroom, and bicycle safety checks. Bicyclists were led down Rhode Island Avenue by Captain John Brandt and other bike patrol officers of the University of Maryland Police Bike Patrol Program. The Ride went south on the new College Park Trolley Trail and then under US 1 and through the campus of the University of Maryland to the College Park Bike Shop. The ride returned along Knox Road, over the CSX railroad tracks and under the Metro tracks at the College Park Station to the Anacostia Trail System. The ride went north on the Northeast Branch Trail, past Lake Artemesia, across Greenbelt Road, and then on Cherrywood Lane (one of the few roads in Maryland with designated bike lanes.) Cyclists used the tunnel at the Greenbelt Metro Station to get to the other side of the rail tracks. Back at REI there were more bananas and drawings for the door prizes donated by REI. The next CPABC ride is the Maryland 500 Bicycle Awareness Tour the last Sunday in April, April 27, 2003.
