Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club
The Ride to the Potomac River Festival
Sunday, October 3, 1999
Club members Colleen Faini, Dorothy Hodges, Jim and Jane Hudnall, and Hugh Smith with guests Ann and Fred Boyar cycled from Dynard Elementary School to Colton's Point for the St. Clement's Island Potomac River Festival.
We took a water taxi from Colton's Point to St. Clement's Island and then a hay ride across the island to the 40 foot cross erected in 1934 to commemorate the landing of Maryland's first settlers in 1634 and their celebration there of the first Roman Catholic Mass in the English colonies.
We learned the history of St. Clement's Island, "the Birthplace of the State of Maryland," and we went aboard a replica of the Dove, the supply ship that accompanied the colonists sailing in the Ark.
Back on the mainland, we joined the festivities and feasted on crab-cakes and oysters before cycling the "Scenic Route" back to the starting point.
