Southern Maryland Century '99

" I thought your Century was awesome" was one of several comments a rider e-mailed to info@ohbike.org. We hope that each of the 125 riders on the Oak Ridge Odyssey on September 12 enjoyed the day and had an "awesome" ride. Much credit must be given to Event Coordinator Jeanne Ulrich and her crew of volunteers. Jeanne planned the route, made the maps and cue-sheets, designed the T-shirts and flyers, arranged the rest-stops, and supervised the road marking. Helping her with the road marking were Diane Harris and Jim Hudnall. Lynn and Lee Martin bought the food and supplies, making sure that each rest stop was well stocked. We appreciate the donations of bagels from Einstein Bagels and Chesapeake Bagels.

"I have done your century routes 2 or 3 times and I think it’s the best kept secret in the area." Although we publicized the ride in the League of American Bicyclists' Best Bike Events, in Bicycling Magazine, in local newspapers, and with flyers mailed to club members and bike shops in the area, we had less turnout than the 200 riders we had planned for. We hope that everyone who enjoyed the ride this time will be back next year with a friend, or two. Put next year's ride on your calendar - Sunday, September 10, 2000.

"You all are very friendly." Riders were greeted with a friendly welcome by club president Pierre Summerville and registration workers Dorothy Hodges, Jane Hudnall, and Charlotte Kraebel. On the road and ready to help riders were SAG wagon drivers Diane Harris, Jack Snead, Scott Overfield, Jim Hudnall, and Pierre Summerville.

"Your rest-stops can't be beat." The first stop, with the spectacular view of the Port Tobacco Creek and the Potomac River, was at the home of Art and Dottie Lunquist. Their grandson Eric Poole helped them serve food and drink to the riders. Mimi Newcastle and John Travis were at the next rest stop, under the big oak tree in front of the Parish Hall of Christ Church in Chaptico. The third rest stop was on Breton Bay at the home of Peter Ulrich and family. While Pete and Jeanne Ulrich were serving homemade ice-cream at the rest-stop, their daughter-in-law was at the hospital giving birth to a son. Riders upon returning to Oak Ridge Park were treated with cold watermelon and hot dogs prepared by Jane Hudnall and Charlotte Kraebel.
