August Picnic
Oxon Hill Bicycle and Trail Club
August 14, 1999
Forty club members and guests came out on a hot and humid August morning for the club's annual picnic at Marshall Hall. Twenty-five went for a bicycle ride before the picnic. Pierre Summerville led a group of 12 A and B riders on a loop that took them over Bumpy Oak Road, down Rose Hill, and back through Pisgah and Chapman Forest. The route was about 40 miles, with a few choosing a longer option of 45 miles. Don Freeman led a group of six CC riders on a 26 mile ride to Indian Head and back. Randy Schoch had two other riders with him on the 22 mile C route, and Dorothy Hodges had one other with her on the 12 mile D route. Two cyclists were late for the CC group, but took off on their own with a map and cue sheet. There were no problems other than a couple of flat tires and the cue sheet saying Billingsley instead of Hungerford.
The riders returned to Marshall Hall about noon to find food and drink waiting for them. With hearty appetites they ate hot-dogs, tomato sandwiches, cole slaw, potato chips, potato salad, apples, and watermelon. Even though the day had started with threatening skies and a forecast for scattered thunderstorms, at noon the sky was clear, and pleasant breezes cooled us in the shade of the the large oak trees. Several people that weren't able to ride came to the picnic. Everyone enjoyed visiting with each other, as some club members seldom see members in other ride classes. Everyone is looking forward to doing it again next year.
